B.J. Huseby Named Minnesota's Outstanding Senior Citizen, 1967

Ben Huseby was named Minnesota’s Outstanding Senior Citizen for ’67 last Thursday. The award was presented by Gov. Harold LeVander at the opening of a two-day Governor’s Conference on the Aging.
Huseby was born Dec. 21, 1887, on a farm near Adams in Mower County and has lived his entire life in the area.
Huseby graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Agriculture in 1908 and returned to Adams to join his father in operation of a dairy farm specializing in purebred Holstein cattle. At 21, Ben was elected director of the Adams Co-op Creamery, the first in a series of “no-pay but plenty of hard work” jobs of community service in agriculture, agri-business and agri-government.
Today Huseby is “taking it easy” and some of his activities are:
Partner – management of the 600 acre dairy farm with his two sons, Aaron and Byron; management of his full-time insurance agency, ranks among the top 30 in seniority with the country’s largest auto insurance firm; vice president of the Mower County Cancer Society and chairman of its rural area solicitation committee; board chairman of the Mower County Service Co., patron- owned sales cooperative; secretary of the Mower County Farmers Fire & Lightning Mutual Insurance Co.
Director of the Adams Rural Fire Protection Agency; secretary-treasurer of the Mower County Soil Conservation District; member of the executive board of the Mower County Extension Council; active member of the Adams Businessmen’s Assn. and recently honored by this group for 20 years as president and 46 years as a member; member of the Adams Lions, Grange and Farm Bureau; active parish leader of Little Cedar Lutheran Church.
Some of the high points of his many years of public service have been president of the Southeastern Minnesota Soil Conservation District for four years and director of the organization for four additional years, director of the Minnesota State Soil Conservation District for four years; ten years a member of the University of Minnesota’s Advisory committee on Agricultural Research; past president, vice president and director of the Minnesota Holstein Assn.; vice president and chairman of the resolutions committee of the Minnesota Farm Bureau for 12 years, state director of the Minnesota Farm Bureau Service Co. 12 years, one of the leaders of the state dairy industry which helped establish Princess Kay of the Milky Way and June as Dairy Month campaigns.
Received along with his sons the Minneapolis Star-Tribune Awards for the most complete soil conservation program in the district in 1957, served 12 years as superintendent of swine exhibits at the Minnesota State Fair, served several years as chairman of the fish and wildlife committee of the Minnesota Soil Conservation Service, called at least on six different occasions to Washington to testify before House and Senate committees on farm legislation.
Manager of many Adams community athletic teams, president of the Mower County Farm Bureau 1933-1953, chairman of the Mower County Agricultural Stabilization Committee 1934-1954, chairman of the Mower County Red Cross during World War II, many years chairman of the Mower County Soil Conservation District, president of the Mower County Farmers Fire & Lightning Mutual Insurance Co., 1925-1952, organizer and first president of the Mower County Livestock Breeders Assn., president of the Adams Cooperative Creamery for many years, past president of the Mower County Holstein Assn.; served 20 years as president of Mower county Fair Board and five years as secretary, and postmaster Adams five years.
